The 8th spot on the list of the most well-known and influential surfboard shapers goes to Mike Diffenderfer, aka The Diff, a North Shore pioneer. Mike shaped his first board in 1951 out of balsa wood. Showing a raw talent in wood board building, The Diff became known as one of the finest craftsmen in board building.Prior to his death at the age of 64, Mike shaped roughly 25,000 boards, many of them becoming collection pieces. The Diff was a self-taught shaper, who studied the curving lines of airplane wings and applied that structure to his surfboards to create rocker. Mike Diffenderfer deserves recognition and remembrance for being a true pioneer in surfboard shaping, his work will continue to be well respected among the industry and his skill honored by other shapers forever.
